The lacrosse stick (also called a crosse) is the primary piece of equipment used in the game of lacrosse to catch, carry, pass, and shoot the ball.
Indigenous Roots: Lacrosse originated with Indigenous peoples of North America (e.g., the Haudenosaunee, Cherokee, and others) centuries ago. Traditional sticks were made of carved wood and rawhide netting.
1800s: European settlers adopted and modified the game. The first standardized wooden sticks were produced in Canada.
1900s–1950s: Wooden sticks remained standard; handcrafted by artisans, especially from Mohawk communities.
1970s: Introduction of plastic heads revolutionized stick desig..
2000s–Present: Evolution to composite shafts (carbon fiber, titanium) and mesh nets for better ball control and weather resistance.
Regulated by governing bodies like:
Stick checks are performed by referees to ensure compliance with rules.
Illegal sticks (e.g., too deep a pocket, too short, altered heads) can result in penalties.
Stringing regulations: Some levels limit the number and style of shooting strings and sidewall strings.
Customization rules: Paint and decals are allowed but cannot impair visibility or be used to deceive.
Manufacturers must meet safety and design standards (e.g., ASTM and NOCSAE compliance).
Roles of the Lacrosse Stick
Offense: Used for passing, catching, dodging, and shooting.
Defense: Long sticks allow greater reach for checking opponents and intercepting passes.
Face-offs (men’s): Specialized sticks (or heads) like the “FOGO” head are often used.
Goalkeeping: Larger head helps in shot-blocking and clearing the ball.
Pocket: Mesh or leather netting that holds the ball.
Shaft: Handle of the stick, often made of metal or composite.
Head: Top part of the stick used to control the ball.
Shooting Strings: Strings placed to help ball release; limited in length and number in most leagues.
Illegal Stick: A stick that doesn’t conform to regulations, resulting in a technical or personal foul.
